The Mount Isa Mines Rodeo 2026, George Street, Mount Isa

Born in a tin shed on Springbrook Mountain and raised on rough treks between Outback townships, Elvis Kernaghan found his voice in the people and places of regional Australia.

Music has been part of Elvis's life from the very beginning. At 12, he joined his family touring remote Australia, living out of a caravan and performing in Outback schools and communities. Those experiences sparked a lifelong connection to the people, stories and landscapes of the Australian bush.

When his family moved to the Channel Island of Guernsey when he was just 14, Elvis continued writing and performing, always knowing his music would one day take him back home. At 19, he returned to Australia alone with an FG Falcon, a pop-top caravan and a guitar, picking up gigs across the country, including a residency at the iconic Daly Waters Pub.

Today, Elvis tours alongside The Min Min Lights, reaching some of Australia's most remote communities. Alongside live shows, the band delivers songwriting, performance and recording workshops in regional schools, helping young people tell their own stories through music.

A driving force behind Elvis's work is the legacy of both sides of his family. His father was raised on the road, touring Australia with the Rick and Thel Show alongside his family Ray, Pam, Lee, Tania and Fiona Kernaghan. Their lives revolved around music, storytelling and the communities they visited, laying the foundations for a family tradition that continues today.

At the same time, Elvis grew up with the stories of his grandfather, Dr Hugh Cairns, whose lasting friendship and collaboration with Wardaman Elder Bill Yidumduma Harney helped preserve and share Territorian Aboriginal culture, language and history through a series of acclaimed books (including Dark Sparklers 2004). Their journeys across the Northern Territory and the stories they brought home left a lasting impression on Elvis, shaping his appreciation for Australia's cultural heritage and the importance of listening to, preserving and sharing authentic stories.

Together, these family influences and the band’s experience of distilled raw talent of young people in small communities have become the foundation of Elvis's songwriting, and his passion for remote and regional touring.

Now in 2026, Elvis and The Min Min Lights are screaming back across the bush with a razor-sharp catalogue of songs produced by Nick DiDia (Powderfinger, Ocean Alley, Rage Against the Machine, Bruce Springsteen, Red Hot Chili Peppers). Mixing fresh original Australiana with timeless Aussie classics, the band is playing everywhere from country halls to the Mount Isa Rodeo, while continuing their mission of bringing songwriting and recording workshops to some of Australia's most remote schools.

No fake American accents - just real-life grit, laughs and stories.

Their debut deluxe EP, Electromagnetic, is out now & available exclusively at live shows.
