In 2017, Elvis Kernaghan joined his family on the Femina Australis tour of remote community schools bringing the joy of music and songwriting to Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia, from Doomadgee, Timber Creek, Borroloola, Jungdranung, Ngalangangpum, Billiluna, Djugerari and Yandeyarra to name a few.
Now in 2025 at 20 years old, Elvis with his own band The Min Min Lights are heading out to bring music and songwriting skills to a new generation of kids growing up in the Australian bush, already doing so in schools such as Bedourie, Dajarra, Eromanga, Jericho, Burketown, Normanton, Croydon, Mistake Creek, Wyandra, Tambo, Birdsville and Morney Plains Station this year so far with fantastic receptions from staff, students and wider communities.
Celebrating culture, community and history is the focus of the exciting and engaging 60 - 120 minute songwriting workshop where children are encouraged to tell their own stories in song, fashioned with inspiration and professional support by this troupe of musicians.
The band then help arrange the children’s brand new song, and it is professionally live recorded the with the help of the students on stage as a part of a 60 minute concert, also featuring music from Aussie icons, as well as Elvis’ fun new originals in an exciting and interactive set tailored to the school, aimed at celebrating life in the bush.
Along the way, students learn foundational components of songwriting and performance such as microphone technique, major-minor tonality, dynamics + song-structure and writing techniques to name a few.
Fun, educational, affordable and adaptable to all levels of learning, this workshop is sure to be one of the highlights of the 2026 remote schools program.
